4 Things to Factor in When Hiring a Locksmith

Whether you've experienced a break-in or you're trapped outside without your keys, a locksmith can be the answer to all your problems. But how can you know whether you're choosing the right one? Take a look at four things to take into consideration when hiring a locksmith.

1. The services you may require

One of the most common reasons why people call a locksmith is because they lost or forgot their house keys, but it's not the only reason you may need their services. A broken lock can also leave you in need of a locksmith. Alternatively, you may want to change your locks for extra security after a break-in or to prevent an ex or old housemate from returning. Not all locksmiths offer all services, so if you need specific help with breaking or replacing a lock, make sure you find a provider with the right experience and tools for the job.

2. Their credentials

Not just anyone can cut keys and fix locks. While it's certainly possible for someone to teach themselves locksmith skills, for the best quality service, always choose someone with the right credentials. In Australia, locksmiths must go through an apprenticeship in order to qualify. To find qualified locksmiths, ask your chosen provider whether they have Certificate II credentials in locksmithing from TAFE, the only awarding body in the country.

3. Their reputation

Of course, while credentials are important, you may also want to check their reviews. To make sure your locksmith of choice is reputable, you'll need to take a look at their reputation. Online reviews are a great way to find out whether past clients have had a positive or negative experience. You can also ask around with friends and family for recommendations, or even ask your chosen locksmith to connect you with past clients you can ask questions to.

4. Their price

In general, price isn't indicative of quality. That said, note that exceptionally low or high prices are generally a red flag and may require you to more thoroughly investigate their services. To work out the average price you will be expected to pay, shop around for different locksmiths and compare their fees for the service of your choice. If most locksmiths are charging $50 to change a lock, for example, this is the price that you should look to pay.
